(SportsNetwork.com) – Davis Love III will apparently have another chance as
Ryder Cup captain for the United States.
According to the Golf Channel, Love will be selected as the leader of the U.S.
squad for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota. The announcement is
likely to come next week at PGA of America headquarters in Florida.
Love was the captain of the 2012 team at Medinah when Europe rallied from a
10-6 deficit on the final day to steal a 14 1/2 – 13 1/2 victory. It tied the
largest last-day comeback in Ryder Cup history.
The U.S. also lost the most recent Ryder Cup, a resounding defeat of 16 1/2 –
11 1/2 last year behind the heavily criticized stewardship of Tom Watson. A
task force to choose the next captain was created in the wake of the
controversy.
Love would become the eighth man to captain the Ryder Cup more than once,
joining Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Burke, Jack
Nicklaus and Watson.
Europe is expected to name Darren Clarke as its captain, a decision that will
reportedly be announced Wednesday.
